Firth Vickers supplied the first annular centrispun castings used on the combustion chamber of the Whittle gas turbine engine.
In 1941, the first annular centrispun castings used on the combustion chambers of the Whittle gas turbine engine gave a dimensional comparison with the spun stator casting for a standby turbine generator, over 2 metres outside diameter, weighing approximately 1 tonne. Over 200 industrial Olympus gas generators were sold to electrical utilities company in seventeen countries for the production of electrical energy.

Firth Vickers Centrispinning
FVC (Firth Vickers Centrispinning) was established in 1935 at the Staybrite Works in Sheffield, playing a key role in the development of stainless (“Staybrite”) steels and the supply of cast components for demanding service environments. During the 1940s, the site supported the rapid growth of UK aerospace and other critical industries, building a strong reputation for manufacturing components designed to perform reliably in high-temperature, high-stress applications as gas turbines and jet propulsion technologies advanced.
As the British steel industry evolved, so too did FVC. In 1975, the business operated as Firth Vickers Foundry Ltd under Johnson Firth Brown, before becoming Firth Vickers Centrispinning Ltd in 1989 following its acquisition by Triplex Lloyd. In 2002, FVC joined Doncasters, trading successfully as Doncasters FVC for nearly two decades.
In January 2024, FVC returned to independent ownership through a management buyout, marking an exciting new chapter in its history. Today, FVC is a trusted partner to customers worldwide, delivering high-integrity centrifugal castings and precision-machined components to the aerospace, industrial gas turbine, and other critical sectors where performance, reliability and quality are paramount.
Firth Vickers Drilling
FVD (Firth Vickers Drilling) founded in the 1980s in the heart of Sheffield’s world-renowned steel industry, the Firth Vickers Drilling site began life as a steel stockholder with limited internal machining capability. Its early focus was on supplying high-quality steel materials to a range of industries, with particular emphasis on the Oil and Gas industry. From the outset, the business differentiated itself by offering first-stage machining of raw materials as a value-added service for internal sales. This approach provided customers with enhanced readiness and efficiency while giving the company a competitive edge over traditional steel stockholders.
Over time, the business evolved through several ownership changes, yet its core strength in steel stockholding remained constant. As markets developed and customer expectations grew, significant investment was made to expand machining capability beyond its original scope. The site transitioned from simply preparing raw materials to delivering advanced, high-precision machining solutions. Major capital investment in deep hole boring equipment, manual lathes, CNC honing, and CNC turning transformed the operation into a specialist engineering facility.
Firth Vickers Engineering
FVE (Firth Vickers Engineering) is our precision CNC machining division based at the Teesamp Advanced Manufacturing Park Middlesbrough. This highly invested facility offers an extensive range of multi-axis, multi-task CNC machinery and CMM equipment capable of manufacturing complex quality critical components for a range of sectors including Aerospace, Marine, Defence, Power Generation, Chemical and Oil and Gas.
Firth Vickers France
FVF (Firth Vickers France) traces its roots back to 1869 with the founding of Hachette & Driout, a pioneering copper foundry established by Félix Hachette and Adolphe Driout. From its early focus on metalworking and construction, the company rapidly expanded its expertise, gaining recognition by 1888 in advanced boiler-making, iron structures, and high-quality cast components.
A major transformation began in 1969 under André Robert-Dehault, whose long-term leadership drove continuous innovation, including the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as AOD conversion and advanced inspection systems. This commitment to excellence was reinforced in 1992 with ISO 9001 certification, embedding a culture of quality, performance, and customer trust.
Further investments between 2012 and 2014 strengthened production capabilities with modern facilities. In 2026, integration into the Paralloy Group marked a new chapter, positioning Firth Vickers France as a key player in delivering high-integrity metallurgical solutions for critical industries including energy, nuclear, and defence.
