What Is S-MART® Technology?

S-MART is an enhanced heat transfer technology primarily developed for radiant coils used in steam cracking application. S-MART uses a weld profile that is applied to the inner diameter of centrifugally cast tubes, after boring  operation.  

The introduction of weld profile into the inner diameter increases velocity of the gas or liquid passing through the tubes. The weld profile has been engineered in a way to increase velocity by means of centrifugation and not random turbulence to keep pressure drop across the coil as low as possible. Weld profile is proprietary to Paralloy Group and the size / shape varies with tube diameter. The application of S-MART is made for each furnace on a case by case basis to optimise the profile suitable for furnace type and feedstock, achieving the highest performance possible.

How Does SMART Improve Tube Efficiency?

What makes S-MART particularly unique is that it does more than generate surface turbulence in the gas near the tube wall. It creates intense turbulent mixing that extends all the way to the centre of the tube, where the colder gas is typically found. By driving the hot gas from the tube wall into the core, S-MART promotes a much more uniform temperature distribution across the tube cross-section. 

As a result, the gas in the centre reaches a temperature much closer to that of the gas near the wall, enabling it to crack with comparable efficiency. This leads to higher overall conversion and improved cracking yield. In practical terms, S-MART increases ethylene production for the same gas feed rate and furnace temperature.
